The Paston Community Association had announced ambitious plans to hold the biggest “pop festival” Peterborough had ever seen, suggesting acts to include Slade and T Rex. This gig was seen as a tester to see whether music fans would fill the 1,500 capacity marquee.
“Laxtons Field, for those that don’t know was a big field down Fulbridge Road, where the parkway now is. Think Mungo Jerry were there in about 1970, and seem to think it was a free event, though can’t be sure on that. Also remember one of the security guards, who I knew at the time, being beat up by a gang of hells angels!”
“Mungo Jerry played a one off gig off Fulbridge Road when he was living with Cat Stevens. I believe he also wrote the song “In The Summertime” because of his happy times in Peterborough.”
“I remember Mungo Jerry having a concert, there was a big circus tent in the fields. I lived in Wordsworth Close at the time and could see it from my mums bedroom window. We could hear the music very well.“
“When Mungo Jerry were playing a concert in Peterborough we (the motorcycle club I was in) went to watch but we were rounded up by the cops before the concert began and carted off in paddy wagons back to the city center and then released. Of course the bikes were 8 miles away !”

the band’s appearance came only four weeks after their first album had been released but the Peterborough trip came as a break from the recording of their second album, Queen II !

“I was 35 at the time of the gig. The night out was organised by work colleagues from RAF. The venue was not that big as I recall… with eating places… theater stage type. I remembers lots of amplifiers, very contrasting lighting, costumes were black and white as I can remember. The frontman was walking across the stage with the microphone on the stand… Good response from the audience as I recall. The concert was 60 to 90 minutes long. I thought they were good enough to play in a larger venue and could go a long way !”

Me and my mate watched them rehearse in rehearsal rooms in Westgate – did not have a clue who they were or how famous they were going to be!
Local bands “Pini” and “Savage Rose” were support
“on the way to the gig, the band stopped off at the off-licence in Ledbury Road where I had a part time job. The manager said they all looked like girls ! Freddie was very camp (as always) and bought bottles of wine. I ran outside to check out the sign writing on the transit van and it said “Queen”.”
“Unfortunately someone turned on a fire hydrant in the Town Hall after the Queen gig which flooded the basement so no more concerts were allowed at the venue. I also remember that a girl with Queen who operated a follow spotlight had her arm in plaster.”
One of my friends was a bouncer there that night. He told me that Queen had to stop the show as a fight broke out between skin heads and rockers!!!
“I was the Savage Rose bassist until a couple of months before this gig ….. it was their first gig after I left. I was a huge Queen fan at the time so you can imagine how I felt! I still went to see them though and I have a clear memory of standing next to Brian May watching my old band”.
I remember my Mum told me the gig was on but I was working at the BBC in London and had plans that weekend. A couple of weeks later we met the band in the BBC Club at Television Centre after their appearance on TOTP. I seem to recall that a friend had to sign them in as the weren’t members! Freddie remembered the Peterborough gig as he’d loved “the wonderful marble staircase darling” (this was before he started calling everyone darling)!
I am the “Dave Green” mentioned on the poster…”Heavier Soundz by…” I promoted the event which was a good event despite a lot of problems. The security was by the “Hells Angels” chapter “Iron Horse” and then another Angels chapter (Cherokee, I think) started to fight with the Horsemen… The town hall was flooded. “Someone” had turned on the fire-hoses , needless to say, the “Telegraph” had a good story on the Saturday.

Queen – Great Hall, Oundle School – 7th October 1973

Gig was cancelled at the last moment as Queen had performed in London for the BBC In Concert series at Golders Green Hippodrome on 13th September for broadcast on BBC on 20th October. The band’s first overseas gig, in Germany, took place six days after the scheduled Oundle show and this was more likely the reason why the band pulled out.
Gig was booked by Oundle School’s “Rock Society”
Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson, who was an Oundle School pupil at the time, stated that the band had pulled out because they had “gone big in America overnight”
